Harriss Cleland Malan

	Harriss Cleland Malan, age 93, of Carbondale, formerly of Pinckneyville, died Monday, January 22, 2001 at 7:20 p.m. in the Carbondale Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
	Harriss was born in Perry County, Illinois on August 26, 1907, the son of Camille and Margaret (Templeton) Malan.  He married Fannie Belle Roe on June 7, 1933; she preceded him in death on November 5, 1992.
	He received his bachelors degree from Park College in Parkville, Missouri.  He began his teaching in Pinckneyville, Illinois , was a high school teacher at Vandalia, Illinois and was the high school principal at Onarga, Illinois.  He worked as a sales representative for Houghton-Mifflin Publishing company for over 30 years where he worked on the American Heritage Dictionary.
	Harriss taught technical subjects to young men entering the military during World War II.  he lived in Ann Arbor, Michigan and relished his life there.  He received his Masters Degree from the University of Michigan during that time.
	 Harriss came to  SIU in 1970 as an administrative aide in the College of Education and retired from that position in 1976.
	 He had a wonderful sense of humor and a great love for children.  He was the Philanthropist of the Year 2000 for the SIU School of Medicine.  He funded numerous scholarships for Park College, SIU and SIU School of Medicine and funded Alzheimers Research at the SIU School of Medicine.  IN memory of his wife, he donated to Green Earth, Inc., Flag Land Park whish is located near his home on Sunset Drive.  He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Masonic Lodge, the Shriners, The Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow of the Rotary.
	 He is survived by numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends of all ages.  He was preceded in death by parents, wife and two brothers, Russell and Lowell.
	 Funeral services were held at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Homein Pinckneyville, Illinois on Friday, January 26, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Karen Terada and Glen Webb officiating.
	 Visitation was held at the funeral home on Thursday, January 25, 2001 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and on Friday, January 26, 2001 from 8:00 a.m. until services.  Interment was in Galum Presbyterian Cemetery in Pinckneyville, Illinois.
	 Memorials may be made to the SIU School of Medicine.
